More than three months after Mayor Bloomberg's announcement that he had sent private investigators into five states to catch gun dealers making illegal sales, he is refusing to turn over the evidence they've gathered to the federal agency that investigates illegal guns. Analysts said the impasse may have slowed the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in its investigation of and possible action against gun dealers that broke the law.

Do Gun Owners Really Want to Stop Constant Assaults on 2nd Amendment?

Here's the latest on Richard's situation and I wonder if gun owners who only want someone else to fight for their Second Amendment rights even give a damn:

Due to the stress of the raid and all the legal burdens, this past week Richard's wife miscarried and their baby died. They named her Grace Evangeline. There are no words to describe how I felt when I read Richard's mail letting me know how heart broken they were. After the feeling of utter sorrow, then came the rage. This increasingly draconian government is running amok because the feminized men of this country protect it with their fear, laziness or territorial imperatives for fund raising or membership drives.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms industry, said today that Senate passage of AB 352, legislation which will mandate the use of unreliable, patented, sole-sourced technology to microstamp firearms and allow the Attorney General to require bullet serialization of all ammunition is ill-conceived and will result in a ban on ammunition sales in the state, burdening sportsmen, hunters and firearms enthusiasts. Microstamping is a patented process that laser engraves the firearm's make, model and serial number on the tip of the gun's firing pin so it imprints the information on discharged cartridge cases.

The number and nature of gun incidents in recent months has been disturbing. The basic facts don't vary that much from case to case: a handgun illegally in the hands of a young person -- often a teenage boy. One might wonder where all those guns come from. Kids can't walk into a store and buy them, after all. Some are stolen, to become black market merchandise. And some are obtained illegally through "straw purchases."

The Issue: Agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have traced the handgun reportedly used to kill a Reading policeman and arrested a man on a firearms charge.

Our Opinion: To get the guns out of the hands of criminals, such traces should be a routine matter.

When Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were investigating the Watergate scandal, they were told by their confidential source Mark Felt, known as Deep Throat, to follow the money.

"Stop! I have a gun. Leave my house," shouted the 11-year-old girl. And with the words barely out of her mouth, Noel Smith opened fire. Any intruder would be dead on his back, but this was just practice. Noel, along with seven other women, was practicing her marksmanship at a session of Girls and Their Guns, a summer-long program that teaches women how to shoot and about gun safety. On the crisp Saturday morning at the Minturn firing range, shots echoed across the valley leaving the smell of gunpowder lingering in the air.

They sue the gun owners.

Here's a summary of what's going on.

The City of New York hires a bunch of private investigators to go into gun stores in pairs to buy guns. While in the store one investigator does all the talking - asking questions about the gun, etc. - while the other one fills out the paperwork for the required background check. The gun shop owner then runs the background check and sells a weapon to the man who filled out the paperwork, not the man who was asking all the questions.

RE ELMER Smith's Aug. 22 column, " 'Shoot-First' law's coming: Why?":

I couldn't agree more with Smith's point that the measure is a solution looking for a problem. Rep. Steve Cappelli's "stand-your-ground bill" is more of a retreat than advancement in the battle to reduce violence.
