"Sheriff's Lt. Ted Boyne says there were no reports of serious problems or unanswered emergency calls during the outage early Saturday."

Submitter's note: So you have an emergency and dial 911. What if the system isn't working? Can you wait 90 minutes for it to be fixed?

The system wasn't working, so they didn't get any emergency calls. Guess that means there were no emergencies. Hey! Maybe they should turn off 911 all the time. That way there would never be any emergencies!

It appears Obama has picked Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate. Heres a video from the July 23, 2007 Democrat debate where Biden says: Im the guy who originally wrote the assault weapons ban.

Supporters of the right to keep and bear arms have long recognized the value of firearms for the defense of life, liberty and property. But in Florida, a perverse conception of the 2nd Amendment has produced the opposite effect: The cause of gun rights is being used to attack property rights.

"Just after midnight Sunday morning, someone inside a Wellesley Avenue apartment called police to report an intruder inside.

Just moments later, police arrived on the 5600 block and found 32-year-old Vanderlee Stevenson on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to his chest."

Submitter's note: You know how it is. Man enters home, there's a 911 call, the police arrive and the only thing they can find is a dead body.

On its 75th anniversary Saturday, members of the Hazleton Owls Rod and Gun Club celebrated its decades-old tradition alongside the National Rifle Association president. Only members of the club knew John Sigler would be attending a celebratory banquet at Genetti Best Western Inn and Suites in Hazle Township. Sigler said 75 years for any organization to be active is a long time. Sigler, who took the NRA helm in 2007, spoke to the crowd about the upcoming election, noting gun owners have to choose candidates who will protect their rights. He called presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama an anti-hunter and said the right to bear arms has become a wedge issue dividing citizens.

One of the more surprising twists in the debut of Joe Biden as Barack Obamas running mate has been the Democrats decision to highlight Bidens work on the 1994 crime bill. Its almost as if theyre determined to keep Biden from being pigeonholed as just a foreign policy guy, who brings nothing to the ticket on the domestic side.

A Portland woman was released from jail this weekend after a Multnomah County grand jury concluded that she killed a 21-year-old man in self-defense.

Donyel Helen Hormats, 19, had been arrested on a murder charge Aug. 15 after she fatally stabbed Christopher Darrell Richardson. Hormats told investigators she had been carrying a knife for protection because Richardson, who wanted her to work for him as a prostitute, had assaulted her two nights earlier.

Gun control laws frequently require the use of technology by law enforcement, as well as placing requirements on manufacturers and, ultimately, the consumer. Are these effective? Since I live in California I will focus on local laws, the #1 state for the Brady Campaign.

On gun rights, the platform has evolved considerably since 2000, when in the wake of the Columbine, Colo., shootings, the party highlighted its efforts to pass a series of tough gun measures. In 2004, the party scaled down its plank on that to one line, recognizing "Americans' Second Amendment right to own firearms." This year's platform adds that "what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne" and respects "different views on this issue." The centrist tilt comes even after the recent slaying of the Arkansas Democratic Party chairman.

John is a true leader who isn't afraid to take a difficult position. If elected, he would work to secure our nation's borders and stem the tide of illegal immigration. He would defend our Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms and oppose the Real ID Act, which is an affront to our civil liberties. He would reform entitlement programs that pillage government coffers and eliminate the pork barrel travesty known as congressional earmarking.

UT: Concealed carry should be enough for gun owners

Most people don't like guns. They don't want to see them, especially at school. They want to believe they are in a perfectly safe bubble and think guns are for bad guys and violent movies. It's wasted energy to attempt to change their minds. Trying to force acceptance by openly carrying will not change their opinions. It will only create a hostile environment and increase their efforts to eliminate guns on campus.

When you conceal carry, nobody is the wiser. People who are anti-gun don't have to get nervous, and permit holders still have their weapons with them on campus. U gun owners should have appreciation for all they enjoy, not muddle the system with unnecessary demands....

Since January, Dave Whetzel of Hunter's Paradise watched an increasing number of Shenandoah Valley residents enter the shop to get information about concealed-weapon permits, which are up statewide for the second year in a row. Virginia residents wanting the right to carry a firearm have filed into circuit courts throughout the state at a record pace this year, according to statistics from more than 50 jurisdictions analyzed by the Daily News-Record.

Mayor Bloomberg's insistence that New York City routinely inspect out-of-state gun stores recently led to a tense moment in a small Pennsylvania town. The owner of a gun shop in Mount Penn, Pa., barred the city's emissary from entering the store last month despite consenting to the visit in an earlier court settlement. At one point, the store owner, Jay Fisher of Gallery Guns, shouted: "This is my store, and I tell you what is going to happen," according to a report of the incident filed in federal court in Brooklyn.

GUN CONTROL

McCain: Voted against ban on assault-type weapons but in favor of requiring background checks at gun shows. Voted to shield gun-makers and dealers from civil suits. "I believe the Second Amendment ought to be preserved which means no gun control."

Obama: Voted to leave gun-makers and dealers open to suit. Also, as Illinois state lawmaker, supported ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.

No good will come of these bad ideas. When children return to school in Harrold, Texas, later this month, they might find some teachers are hauling more than textbooks into the classroom. Leaders of the tiny North Texas school district have given teachers the go-ahead to carry concealed weapons on campus.

The district, which has about 50 teachers and staffers, won't reveal how many will be bringing a gun to school. The superintendent said he wants to keep that a secret from potential attackers and students.

What if you walked into your first class this week, sat down, got out some paper to scribble notes on and then you noticed that the professor at the front of the room is strapped with a 9-millimeter handgun on their belt? What would be your first reaction? Some say this occurrence should take place in every classroom in the country. Those some are also from the great state of Texas - the biggest bunch of "freedom" loving, church-going, gun- toting folks you will ever meet.

As summer began, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels said he was taking steps to prohibit guns on all city-owned property after three people were injured in a shooting at Seattle Center's Northwest Folklife festival.

But as the Center's summer festival season concludes with Bumbershoot this weekend, no prohibition has taken effect.

...

In the state Legislature, representatives and senators have asked state Attorney General Rob McKenna to issue an informal legal opinion on whether state law pre-empts Nickels' executive order....

Also, the Second Amendment Foundation and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, both based in Bellevue, have notified Nickels they intend to mount a legal challenge to the executive order.

When Joseph Calanchini walked into the Grand Hyatt hotel with 2 rifles and 2 pistols Saturday around 4 p.m., Denver Police evacuated House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from the hotel until they arrested Calanchini and made sure it was safe for Pelosi to return.

"I didn't even know the DNC was in town. I don't watch the news," said Joseph Calanchini from the Denver City Jail where he's being held on bond. "If I had known, I would have done things differently. It was a simple mistake."

Calanchini, who talked to 9Wants to Know from the Denver City Jail, says he had the weapons because he's getting ready to go on a hunting safari trip in Limpopo Basin, South Africa on August 28.

The Second Amendment...is vague enough to allow widely different interpretations by different Supreme Courts, and between different justices on the same court.

...Martin Clark...said about the federal court system:

"People say again and again, 'We want judges who simply follow the law and do not make it' [and] 'We don't want activist judges,' and I agree with that. That is what makes the system work."

"That having been said," he adds, "I think that works 95 to 99 percent of the time."

He notes that without judicial wiggle room, African-Americans could not vote, married couples in Connecticut could not use birth control pills, and, more recently, D.C. residents could not possess working handguns in their homes.

Police said a shooting that injured a man early Sunday may be a case of self-defense.

Officers said a man and woman were fighting at Northeast 28th Street and Santa Fe Avenue when another man pulled up in a truck.

The woman got into the truck, police said, but the man she was fighting with broke the back window and tried to pull her through it. Thats when the trucks driver shot the man twice.

The victim should recover from his injuries, police said. They have not arrested the driver who fired the shots.
