"On Saturday, it will be 15 years since I wanted to kill. If I'd had a gun the night of Aug. 24, 1987, at least one man-perhaps two-would have died." ...
"But that night, two young men armed with switchblades nearly put an end to any possibility." ...
"Not long after the break-in, I shared those thoughts with a former professor of mine, now a friend and mentor."
" 'If I'd have had a gun, I'd have shot both,' I told her."
"While sympathetic and full of compassion, she wasn't impressed, so I explained further."
"I would be better for me to kill them then let them attack me."
"Her response, to the best of my recollection, was this: 'Certainly it would be horrible if they had done what they wanted to do, but if you had shot them it could have cost you your soul.' "
"Her words stayed with me, niggled me, pissed me off."
"What was I supposed to do? Invite the attackers in so they didn't have to risk cutting themselves on glass, allow them to assault me, then offer them cigarettes?" |

The sheriff's office wanted "to stop The Ledger from publishing the name of a deputy who fatally shot a man who was brandishing a baseball bat during a drug raid."
"We live in an open society," said [Judge] Herring in his ruling denying the department's request for an injunction against The Ledger. "We don't have secret police in our society." [Tell that to the BATF, FBI, CIA, NSA, etc. etc.]
Hank Campbell, attorney for the sheriff, argued that the deputy, who had been working undercover, would be put at risk of "great bodily harm" if the public learned the identity of the deputy. |

"Unidentified attackers gunned down a Russian lawmaker while he was walking his dog in a park Wednesday, the eighth member of parliament to be killed since 1994."
"The killing of Vladimir Golovlyov, 54, as he was walking his Asian-Turkmen wolfhound had the earmarks of a professional hit and followed what may have been a thwarted assassination attempt against him only a few months ago, police and associates said."
"But fellow politicians were unsure whether Golovlyov was more likely killed because of an allegedly corrupt past or because of his role leading the small Liberal Russia faction in the lower house of parliament."

Before you read this, bear in mind that it's about one of those dart guns with darts that have the suction cup on the end -- the kind kids lick and stick to a window or mirror... ------- "MORE tests are taking place today on a toy gun which killed an 11-year-old boy in the New Forest - amid suggestions that it is not a dangerous object."
"Scott West from Pulborough in Sussex died after a two-centimetre long soft dart lodged in his throat and blocked his windpipe."
"The tragedy happened at the Sandy Balls Holiday Centre at Godshill in the New Forest on Tuesday."
"It was not confirmed that the toy which did the damage was bought at the site, but it was similar to guns which were being sold at the time." [emphasis added]
"It was taken away for testing by Hampshire Trading Standards officers, who also carried off the stock of similar guns in the Sandy Balls shop."
"After extensive tests had been carried out at a laboratory at Southsea, a county council spokesman said the toy had not so far been branded as 'dangerous'."
"It is a normal small gun that has little plastic darts with a sucker on the end." |

The number of firearms confiscated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana has allegedly gone down. And a bunch of government employees -- public servants -- got together at a "news conference" Tuesday to say the drop is a result of the anti-gun program they were gleefully promoting: "Project Exile."
"Under 'Project Exile'," says the report, "someone caught with an illegal weapon or violating the law with a weapon may be prosecuted in federal court."
" 'Handguns are the most common type of weapon seized, with the ones used most frequently in crimes being a 9 mm pistol, a .380-caliber pistol, a .25-caliber pistol and a .38-caliber revolver,' [BATF 'Special' Agent Jerry] Dennis said."
BATF "Special Agent" Jerry Dennis then says, "These aren't the type of guns you have in your gun closet to go hunting or target shooting."
MY RESPONSE:
1) All across America, people go "target shooting" with every single above-mentioned pistol/caliber. Some people compete with those calibers -- especially the 9mm -- in organized events BATF "leaders" could find out about, and train "Special" agent spokesidiots about, if they weren't so busy "investigating" people who are exercising their basic-but-grossly-infringed rights.
2) ALL of those calibers/pistols are carried by decent, peaceable Americans for self-defensive purposes. Insinuating that anyone who has one is a criminal is an outrageous insult.
3) Far more importantly, gun ownership doesn't require a "target shooting" or "hunting" justification. The primary reason America's founding fathers drafted and ratified the Second Amendment was as a defense against the kind of tyranny BATF has been known to systematically deliver. |

Maryland isn't exactly friendly to people who wish to exercise their right to keep and bear arms by carrying a firearm for self-defense. Even those fortunate enough to have the rare "unrestricted" permit to carry a firearm have been arrested for not obeying some nuance of the "law".
But in Maryland -- where business owners were charged for shooting a burglar who broke into their business -- you may be surprised to learn that you can get out the old 12 gauge shotgun and kill a few kitty cats legally.
FULL TEXT BELOW... ------- "A Maryland landlord says he warned one of his tenants five times to get rid of her cats -- or else he would."
"She didn't -- so he did. And a judge says it wasn't a crime."
"Judge Mary Stepler ruled yesterday that Eric Grossnickle destroyed the cats in a legally acceptable manner when he shot them with a 12-gauge shotgun."
"Stepler says she doesn't like what Grossnickle did, but added, 'it's not a crime under Maryland law'."
"The case was the first court test of a new state law designed to stiffen penalties for animal cruelty."
"It prohibits acts of torture and mutilation, but allows for killing animals humanely in certain cases."
"The ruling left the cats' owner in tears. Clutching a tin box containing the remains of her cats Babe and Angel, she said, 'there is no justice whatsoever'." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Secrecy is the keystone of all tyranny. Not force, but secrecy ... censorship. When any government, or any church, for that matter, undertakes to say to it's subjects, 'This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,' the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything. You cannot conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him." --Robert A. Heinlein, "Revolt in 2100" (Pg. 68-69, Baen Books paperback edition, 1999 printing) |
