It's frightening to think how many young people in this community and throughout our country have handguns in their cars, on their persons or in their homes.
How did that happen? How did we go from fists 30 years ago to guns and bombs today?
Now, cool your jets, you NRA types. I believe in the right to bear arms and have a couple of handguns myself, in addition to holding a concealed-weapons permit. |

We understand POTUS feels that the recent score of "eight out of eighteen" on the benchmarks out of Iraq wasn't great p.r. We suggest a new goal of "eighteen out of twenty-eight," to be brought about through the addition of ten new benchmarks more likely to be met.

Chicago police used the promise of $100 debit cards to get city residents to turn in their guns.
The offer exceeded expectations as nearly 6,000 handguns and assault weapons were turned in today.
Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says so many guns were turned in the city ran out of the debit cards. Those who turned in guns after the supply of cards were depleted will receive them next week. |

The Kalamazoo Public Safety Department is offering people the chance to turn in guns for money July 21-23. Residents can turn in unwanted firearms at two local events. One was Saturday at the Southside Ministerial Partners event where police collected almost 100 guns. Another event is Sunday at the Kalamazoo Kings Baseball Game. The Kalamazoo Public Safety is holding these events because they are concerned about gun violence in our community. |

This was all ancient history until 10 days ago when Rosenthal and I talked about our trip to the gun show on WRKO-AM's "Finneran's Forum," where I am a daily (paid) guest. The loonies went off again. On Wednesday the Second Amendment Foundation issued a press release headlined: "SAF calls for firing of Boston Globe columnist in straw purchase." It asked the ATF to open an investigation. |

Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., working with the National Rifle Association, helped ensure this week that a proposed federal regulation opposed by gun buyers and vendors will be rewritten to address their concerns. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is updating its safety regulations on the handling and transportation of explosives. The agency's proposed rule was written so broadly that it would have placed impractical restrictions on and likely forced the closure of many gun stores, Rehberg said. Rehberg threatened to introduce an amendment to an appropriations bill on the House floor that would have prevented federal funds from being used to enforce the regulation. |

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), which I founded more than 30 years ago, and others called for an investigation because what Bailey described was arguably a straw purchase, and that�s a felony. Bailey is miffed because on the day we asked for the investigation, and his dismissal from the Globe for this ethical breach, agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and a Manchester police officer tracked down Belair at work, showed him a search warrant and subsequently confiscated the gun.
If only the paper-tiger would take on other than another solicitation campaign. Either we are equal or we are not. Good people ought to be arme where they will, with wits and guns and the truth. |

THE 15th Annual Defense and Sporting Arm Show closed in Manila last week and, among those who were able to go, it was a fine fair; no pun intended. Gun prices generally dropped by 15 percent—enough motivation for many to burn off some hard-earned cash. And many did burn them with impunity; one friend bought two guns of the same brand from the same store. |

One-time model Feroze Gujral is hardly someone one would associate with guns. But as we drive to Top Gun, a newly opened indoor shooting range in New Delhi, she not only talks the part but looks the part as well, with her sporty black jacket and a pair of skinny jeans. Says Gujral with a hint of excitement in her voice, “I have grown up with this sport. My grandfather used to go on shikar so he used to shoot. We used to have guns in the house. I also have lots of friends who are well-known shooters.” The home environment being what it was, Gujral says that by the age of 10 she had started shooting sporadically. |

Gun control advocates cheered when Democrats took over the House and the Senate this year, sure that the change in leadership meant a more friendly environment for new restrictions on the sale and ownership of firearms. But supporters of tighter controls are on the verge of losing the first big battle of the year over gun policy. The House is expected to pass legislation this week renewing a 4-year-old law that makes it harder for police to track the history of firearms used in crimes. |

Whipping westward across Manhattan in a limousine sent by Comedy Central�s �Daily Show,� Ron Paul, the 10-term Texas congressman and long-shot Republican presidential candidate, is being briefed. Paul has only the most tenuous familiarity with Comedy Central. He has never heard of �The Daily Show.� His press secretary, Jesse Benton, is trying to explain who its host, Jon Stewart, is. �He�s an affable gentleman,� Benton says, �and he�s very smart. What I�m getting from the pre-interview is, he�s sympathetic.�

DETROIT - A 17-year veteran narcotics officer has been suspended after police said he is suspected of stealing $2.4 million worth of pure cocaine from the department's property room.
Detroit police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said the unidentified officer had the authority to sign out cocaine from the room. She said he is suspected of replacing six kilograms, about 13.2 pounds, of uncut cocaine with another substance and keeping the drug.
The officer, who has not been charged, was suspended Wednesday with pay pending a criminal and department investigation...

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force... Reason or force, that's it.
In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.
When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force. |

I don’t know about fashion; we journalists usually rate with IT specialists as “worst-dressed professionals.” But I’m pretty sure next year’s biggest political and legal case will involve the U.S. Supreme Court deciding Parker v. District of Columbia. In the process, the court may decide whether the Constitution’s Second Amendment — and, by extension, any amendment — means anything.

Legally, the case is enormous. Not only is the entire Second Amendment up for grabs, so is the concept of whether rights belong to individuals or groups. (Gun-control advocates claim the Second Amendment only applies to state militia groups, not to individual citizens.) |

By way of a specific scientific analysis, Painter hypothesized that more guns equal less crime. Because I love a good debate, and because I believe my rights to not be searched or shot are greater than your right to bear arms, I am accepting this challenge.
While Painter develops an excellent hypothesis, he commits the serious fallacy of approaching the data from the perspective of a lawyer as opposed to that of a scientist. The difference between lawyers and scientists is that lawyers seek to prove their side right; whereas, scientists go to great lengths to prove they're wrong. |
