Backed by a brigade of orange-clad supporters and activists, Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Mary Sheffield led a rally against gun violence on Friday morning, sparking it off with cries of Were fired up! Were fed up!
The rally started at the Spirit of Detroit statue outside City Hall and lasted more than an hour. It featured a performance from the Detroit Youth Choir, which covered the Black Eyed Peas Where is the Love? and appearances from a range of faith leaders, gun safety advocates, and law enforcement representatives.
The rally, Sheffield told the audience of perhaps 40, was meant both to commemorate the national kickoff of Gun Violence Awareness Month and to recognize Detroits own struggle with firearms.

Social justice busybodies obsessed with how other people live their lives often portray the success of their causes as a matter of destiny. The young people will win, insists one youthful gun control advocate, falsely portraying his personal crusade as a generational mandate. Yet recent events have demonstrated that bedrock American values including support for the Second Amendment tend to outlast moments of high emotion that are increasingly relied upon by political opportunists to advance their agenda. |

In an effort to take a stand against gun violence, San Mateo County officials will consider Tuesday adding their voices in support of a state Senate bill aimed at banning gun shows at the Cow Palace in Daly City. Introduced by state Sen. Scott Wiener in May, Senate Bill 221 will ban sales of guns and ammunition at the Cow Palace after a vendor contract expires in 2020. The bill also includes an exemption for gun buyback programs organized by law enforcement. Because the Daly City facility is owned by the California Department of Agricultures Division of Fairs and Expositions, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors cannot restrict gun shows there, according to a staff report.

Recently, Sheriff Jim Wilson posted his thoughts regarding the practice of purchasing and carrying pricey firearms for personal defense, and Id like to offer my perspective to the conversation. In particular, Id like to address the pervasive sentimenton anonymous Internet forums, at leastthat it is foolish to buy or use expensive firearms because it may need to be used in a defensive shooting, and would subsequently be held as evidence by the police. |

The names of the schools, churches, nightclubs and cities have become synonymous with some of the nations deadliest mass shootings. Columbine, Sandy Hook and Parkland; Sutherland Springs and AME Baptist Church; and Pulse and Vegas. In the aftermath of each massacre, a familiar pattern takes hold: thoughts and prayers are offered, the candles at vigils burn out, and politicians promise action, with some making changes at the state level or proposing a new set of safety guidelines to help protect students from other students. |

These days its impossible for an American citizen fortunate enough to have been born with a functioning mind not to worry about guns and the men who love them, and the innocent victims some of those gun-lovers kill. National Rifle Association spokesman Wayne LaPierre, who tends to blame school shootings on rap music, has accused the government, aided by the media, of attempting to discredit firearms enthusiasts by issuing propaganda worthy of the Nazis.

It was a showdown at high noon outside the State House yesterday as gun rights advocates faced off with counterprotesters. Army combat veteran Mark Sahady, 42, of Boston said he and other members of the Resist Marxism group want to make sure gun control bills before the Legislature are not arbitrary. We know that there was March for Our Lives, so we just want to show that theres people in Massachusetts that are interested in defending the Second Amendment and we want people to know that were here, Sahady said.
