A third gun-related vote - to override the Republican governor's veto of a bill that would require domestic violence offenders and subjects of domestic violence restraining orders to surrender firearms - was postponed until Thursday because a Democratic senator was absent.

Mixed reaction in Utah to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on guns and domestic violence. The Court basically ruled that anyone convicted of domestic violence, whether it's a felony or a misdemeanor, loses their right under federal law to own a gun. The issue involved two men convicted of reckless domestic abuse. That could be anything from smashing a partners phone to preventing he or she from leaving a room.

The second amendment reads: a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be abridged. This suggests to me that the government (we, the people) has the right to regulate who can own and shoot them. It would indicate that we are expected to be responsible and employ common sense in there use.

An alarming new investigation found that nearly 1,000 guns that belonged to law enforcement in California went missing, with many still unaccounted for. And in the worst case scenarios, those guns are used in crimes. On July 1, 2015, 32-year-old Kate Steinle was shot and killed near Pier 14 in San Francisco. Police say the gun used was stolen from a federal agent's car.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As an individual, I believe, very strongly, that handguns should be banned and that there should be stringent, effective control of other firearms. However, as a judge, I know full well that the question of whether handguns can be sold is a political one, not an issue of products liability law, and that this is a matter for the legislatures, not the courts. The unconventional theories advanced in this case (and others) are totally without merit, a misuse of products liability laws. Judge Buchmeyer, Patterson v. Gesellschaft, 1206 F.Supp. 1206, 1216 (N.D. Tex. 1985) |
