"Employers in Minnesota are evaluating how they will comply with a new carry law effective May 28."
"The new gun law allows public and private employers to prohibit employees from possessing a gun 'while acting in the course and scope of employment,' but says those policies cannot prohibit employees or others from lawfully possessing a firearm in the firms' parking facilities."

Fourth and fifth letters on the page:
In response to Barbara Johnson (letter, May 22):
Yes, she is wrong. Numerous court cases all over the country (Silver vs. Minneapolis, locally) have held that the police have no duty to protect individual citizens. In addition, they do not have to respond to 911 calls, even if the dispatcher says that someone is on their way.
I wonder how she feels about politicians (protected as they are by armed guards) who have said for years that we do not need a firearm for protection, that our personal protection is what the police are for.

"The Territory Government yesterday introduced tough new hand gun laws into Parliament, but said there was not a hand gun problem in the Territory."
"Police Minister Paul Henderson said the laws would be introduced as part of national hand gun law changes demanded by the Federal Government after a shooting at a Melbourne university last year. The Firearms Amendment Bill 2003 aimed to restrict the ownership of hand guns, increase the responsibility of hand gun owners and limit the type and calibre of those available to sports shooters. Antique firearms, currently exempt from the Firearms Act, would also have to be registered and their owners licensed. It is expected there will be 1500 fewer hand guns in the NT as a result of the new laws." ...

"I can't stand politics as they have become. I, for one, would like to just have them tell me what they are for or against and then stick to it. When he was running for office, President Bush said that he was pro-gun and pro-gun rights. Then he comes out with the 'assault gun' ban. I've been told that this is just a political ploy to get votes from the other side and that he already has a deal with Congress not to send him the bill to sign. To that I say, dumb idea. This is the kind of game that gets us in trouble every time. Stand for something and win or lose on the merits of that, for once. If the President doesn't think that the gun owners in America give him enough help to get elected then say so, perhaps that can change. At least it would be honest. "The city of Denver misfired in the legal challenge it filed Friday against the state's new law establishing uniform standards for issuing concealed weapon permits. But it was squarely on target with the second part of its suit, aimed at preserving gun ordinances with purely local effect."
"During the 12-year tenure of Mayor Wellington Webb, Denver has automatically denied virtually all requests for concealed carry permits - even those from victims of violent crimes. QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. ALEXANDER WHITE (1787) |
