"On April 24, 1885, the legendary female sharpshooter, Annie Oakley ... was hired by Nate Salsbury to perform in Buffalo Bills Wild West show. She could perform a wide range of tricks with a rifle ..."
"Shooting was a way of life for Oakley, as she grew up hunting and providing food for herself and six siblings. Her father died at a young age ... so Oakley had to be independent."
"Oakley was the first woman to be hired as a trick shooter and showed that the Second Amendment and gun ownership were the greatest guarantors of female equality. Oakley was only about five feet tall and just over 100 pounds, but she could be equal to any man because she could carry and deftly use this great equalizer. " ... |

"A comforting report from msnbc.com highlights what they see as an incongruous silver lining in the countrys persistent economic doldrums: 'Americans, take solace: While your chances of landing a job these days might not be great, youre also less likely to be murdered, or robbed or to have your car stolen. The rate of major crimes in the U.S. continues to drop ... and crime experts arent sure why.' Their 'experts' explain that in every recession since WWII, theres been an increase in crime rates. Criminologist and UC Berkeley law professor Franklin Zimring provides an appetizing visual by pointing out that, 'Whats pushing it down is the mystery meat in the recipe of recent years.' But when he says 'recent years,' what, precisely, does he mean?" ... |

"It is counted upon that after some gun-related crime a column such as 'It's Time to End the Gun Nuttery' (April 18) appears offering reactionary, feel-good solutions and strawmen. Each new piece of gun control legislation is always heralded as keeping guns out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them -- and yet the tragedies still occur, followed by cries for more gun control laws. These crimes did not occur because the system failed; they occurred because people chose to be criminals. How can a system stop the choice of another?" ... |

A recent search of the exhibits at the National Rifle Associations Annual Meeting in St. Louis gave me the opportunity to talk to the company representatives about the guns and also, to handle them.
