WV: Rifle national championship had it all, except for hoped-for result

Sometimes, despite the best-laid plans, things dont work out quite the way you hoped. That was the painful result of West Virginias first-ever hosting of an NCAA national championship event, as the homestanding team fell just eight points short of taking home a title in front of its home fans.

However, it shouldnt be viewed as the overriding one.

Up until the final results of the 2019 Rifle National Championships became apparent, everything had been as on target as a center ten at the WVU Coliseum, and indeed across the rifle community.

The setup was great and multiple video screens were in place to show scores and live video shots from the floor.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson told reporters Tuesday hell continue to hear if theres a case made for changing the current self-defense law, which he said is strong in terms of allowing self-defense and protection.

A Senate panel last week rejected a bill that would no longer require residents to retreat before defending themselves with deadly force, as the current law does.

At last weeks meeting of the Public Safety Committee of the Yates County Legislature, District Attorney Todd Casella shared concerns about the newly enacted state Red Flag law, particularly; the risks law enforcement will face in trying to carry out court orders to seize firearms, the liability the county will face in possible lawsuits, and the logistical matter of storing seized weapons.

The essence of the law will permit family members, teachers, school administrators, and prosecutors to seek court orders to seize guns, according to information from Gov. Andrew Cuomos statement during the Feb. 25 signing of the law.

It seems this is another law thats not well thought out, said Casella.

Constitutional Carry Gaining Ground: Kentucky 16th State to Allow Permitless Concealed Carry

Before the 19th century, there were no state laws regulating the carrying of firearms or other weapons by law-abiding residents. Then, states began to restrict the carrying of firearms and require a permit for those who wanted to exercise their right under the Second Amendment to keep and bear arms, ignoring the fact that that right shall not be infringed. By the 20th century, the only state that did not pass laws infringing the right to keep and bear arms was Vermont.

The constitutional-carry movement began to gain ground in 2003, when Governor Frank Murkowski of Alaska signed House Bill 102 into law. That law marked the first time a state rescinded its laws requiring a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

"A monstrosity and cowardness without equal," Bolsonaro wrote in a tweet expressing his sympathies for the families of the victims of Wednesday's attacks.

Sen. Major Olimpio, a member of Bolsonaro's party and a proponent of loosening gun legislation, again made that argument hours after Wednesday's rampage.

"We can't let those who take advantage of this tragedy speak about how disarmament is the solution," he tweeted, adding: "Weak and shameful 'disarmament farce,' which gave guns to criminals and prevented self-defense."

The firearms debate was back on center stage Tuesday at a public hearing in Randolph. A Senate committee took testimony on a bill that calls for a 48-hour waiting period for gun purchases. Supporters said thats a cooling-off period that would prevent suicides, while opponents said it would infringe on their right to self-defense.

For Monkton resident Scott Chapman, the question before lawmakers this year boils down to this:

What we have before us is a pure civil rights discussion of whether or not our right on the Second Amendment, and Article 16 of the Vermont Constitution, is a right as equal to our other individual rights, Chapman told lawmakers at a public hearing Tuesday.

An Arkansas state senator who angrily repudiated her senate judiciary colleagues when the committee voted to limit public debate on a gun rights bill said Monday she stands by her words and wont apologize for her passion.

Democratic Sen. Stephanie Flowers of Pine Bluff said she has received a very positive response from the public following her forceful disagreement over the bill that would have loosened restrictions on the use of deadly force by gun owners. The bill said residents would not have to attempt to retreat before using lethal force in self-defense.

So I own a new Smith & Wesson Performance Center Model-19 Carry Comp Revolver. I picked it up at the Camarillo Gun Store in California last month. I keep a revolver on my CCW list. (California allows you only a few guns that must be identified by serial number). Since this is an S&W Performance Center product the expert in house gunsmiths at S&W have fine-tuned this K-Comp to make it even better than the already great stock model-19. Their work on the trigger has made it really nice to shoot.

Los Angeles prosecutors say they won't charge a synagogue security guard accused of shooting a person who was recording video of the building.

The Los Angeles Times reports the announcement Thursday came as the woman who was shot filed a civil lawsuit against the guard and his employer.

Edduin Zelayagrunfeld was arrested last month after the shooting outside the Etz Jacob Congregation/Ohel Chana High School.

Prosecutors said they wouldn't be able to prove he wasn't acting in self-defense.

There's a spreading revolt against city-spawned restrictions on self-defense rights by the residents of sparsely settled counties and the officials who represent them. The issue "has largely underscored the rift between rural and urban areas," the Wall Street Journal noted over the weekend. It's a rift that's widening as the political divide in the United States takes on a strongly geographical characterless along state or regional lines than at the borders between dense populations and open country.

A New York Times op/ed by Harvard history professor Tiya Miles has received some questionable praise and promotion from a few conservative commentators this week.

Miles, who describes herself as an African-American historian and, on most issues, decidedly liberal, asks an introspective question: Could I rethink my anti-gun stance?

Apparently, the answer is yes, because what follows is an essay titled The Black Gun Owner Next Door.
