"But when detectives from the South Snohomish County Narcotics Task Force tried to serve the court order, $10,000 of the cash was missing, according to papers filed Tuesday in Superior Court."

"...this latest 'Bill of Rights' proposal is another slap in the face of the Founders' original Bill of Rights... Sen. Schumer's proposal, by contrast, is really a Bill of Regulations that invites more government activism and intrusion."

"Why not a 'Clean Gas Station Bathroom Bill of Rights' and a 'Speedy Restaurant Service Bill of Rights' while we're at it? Such proposals assume we have a God-given right to things we have no right to whatsoever." ...

"The TSA and the aviation industry have made a concerted effort to educate the public about items banned from flights after 9-11, but statistics show that passengers still routinely attempt to bring such items through security checkpoints at the nation's 429 commercial airports."

"Along with the usual reminders to hold the noise down and pay overdue fines, library patrons in Santa Cruz are seeing a new type of sign these days: a warning that records of the books they borrow may wind up in the hands of federal agents."

"The signs, posted in the 10 county branches last week and on the library's Web site, also inform the reader that the USA Patriot Act 'prohibits library workers from informing you if federal agents have obtained records about you.' "

" 'Questions about this policy,' patrons are told, 'should be directed to Attorney General John Ashcroft, Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. 20530.' "

"A 13-year-old student has been suspended for 10 days because his gadget-laden calculator includes a knife, violating the school district's zero-tolerance policy."

"District policy is clear: Weapons are weapons. Whether butter knife or machete, 2 inches or 2 feet, policy dictates an automatic 10-day suspension."

"The severity of the offense means Cortez cannot keep up with his schoolwork at an Alternative to Out-of-School Suspension Center and could lose credit for two weeks of absences."

A weapon is a weapon. They'd better remove baseball bats from gym class, serve pre-cut food at the cafeteria, and force all school staff to open mail with their hands, instead of letter openers.

"When does civil disobedience turn into a federal crime? We may soon find out."

"The Arcata City Council, by a recent vote of 3-1, Councilman Michael Machi dissenting and Councilwoman Elizabeth Conner absent, has decided to oppose the USA Patriot Act and related laws -- and order its management employees to disobey the federal laws involved. Those employees will be asked if they agree to take that stand. But how can they say no; if they do, won't their attitude as team players be suspect?"

"The majority took the action to, as it said, uphold constitutional civil rights and civil liberties. Adoption of the city law could come as soon as March 19."

"There's little indication that the four suspects in the double execution were major players, but with one undercover sale already a done deal and another one planned for Monday night, those involved in the case were, at the very least, getting another gun off the street."

"Police sources say it is that mentality - the "one gun at a time" approach - that often leads to the types of cases that read like a sensational movie script. Just two months ago, police brass announced that one undercover had purchased 59 weapons, from semi-automatic handguns to AK-47s, from dealers in the Kingsborough Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant."

"With the heated words going back and forth about the upcoming war, I am viewing a trend over the Internet that is becoming very troubling, and it's coming from both sides of the fence. Each side seems to be labeling the other side unfairly with negative stereotypes, and even threats. This does not bode well for the country as a whole."

..."All republicans are not in favor of this coming war, just as all democrats are not dead set against it. We both still agree (among other things) that we must support our people in arms if and when war comes. We are after all, both Americans - and neighbors."

"No one has ever shed blood to give people the right to protest. Brave people have shed blood so that others could exercise their right to protest. The right to protest and speak out against ones government and its policies is an inherent right. We were all born with that right as human beings and no one had to die for us to have that right. Governments and others may, and have, prevented people from exercising that right, but the right is still there."

"The United States' evolution from a federal republic to an oppressive empire did not transpire within any specific period in time - meaning it did not occur within a day, a week, a month, or even a year. The progression of the shift occurred within a century, albeit a slow one. What is rather disturbing about this shift is that Americans, throughout this time, were growing increasingly unaware of the radical changes being forced upon them."

"In the past few months alone the Bush administration has refused to tell the American people what it projects a war in Iraq might cost, while at the same time quietly floating a proposal for follow-up to the Patriot Act that would allow, among other things, the government to withhold information on whom it was holding as suspects in the war on terror. And all with little protest."
