MI: Arm teachers? I'm a hunter and a teacher. Here's what I think.

I own guns. Several in fact, including a few rifles and a couple shotguns, all well suited for the deer and bird hunting I enjoy. I also support my neighbors Second Amendment right to lawfully own and use guns.

I do not want a gun in my classroom.

President Donald Trump certainly earns credit for meeting with students and parents recently from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and Sandy Hook, but he alarms me when I hear him push to arm teachers against future school shootings.

AK: Gun control debate hits Alaska Legislature, but without consensus on what to do

The national debate over gun violence and mass shootings hit the Alaska Legislature on Wednesday as lawmakers, high school students and a National Rifle Association lobbyist converged on a hearing on a gun control measure.

State legislators spanning the political spectrum say they want to take action after the nation's latest mass shooting, at a Florida school. But as in Congress, their ideas about how to respond diverge.

Several members of the House's largely Democratic majority have endorsed House Bill 75, which would set up a system to force people to give up their guns if they're deemed by the courts to be a danger to themselves or others.

We know many things that will protect our students at school. Were already doing some of them, but sometimes these precautions fail. Armed teachers are a last resort, and they are essential.

Were having the public discussion that the Socialists asked for. How should we protect our children in schools? CNN used a former FBI Assistant Director, Tom Fuentes, to tell us that women couldnt carry concealed to protect their children.

I dont have to call him stupid since there are many women who speak so well.

Teachers could be armed with guns in schools under legislation being developed by two Republicans in the Michigan House of Representatives.

The legislation is coming in the wake of yet another mass shooting, this time at a high school in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead two weeks ago, sparking protests across the nation from students, teachers and parents who want more gun control.

State Rep. Jim Runestad, R-White Lake, will schedule hearings this spring on a bill that hes drafting that will allow school districts to provide access to guns in locked, undisclosed locations in school buildings to teachers who volunteer and who are trained in firearm use.

The teachers would have to go through 80 hours of training...

Two Michigan Congressmen are among a group of 19 who signed a letter urging immediate consideration of a bill meant to prevent people with violent pasts from buying guns legally.

U.S. Reps. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, and Dave Trott, R-Birmingham, joined colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives in writing a letter to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan urging immediate floor consideration for the legislation.

"As I sat down just this week with our local law enforcement officials they spoke directly to the importance of robust background checks and I couldn't agree more," Upton said in a statement.

Del. Tommy Wright from rural Southside was reported in the Feb. 19s article No hint of bipartisanship on gun legislation to have said: Its senseless. My heart goes out. But when it comes to the constitutional right to defend yourself and your family, thats something thats guaranteed. He was commenting on the shooting with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle at the Florida high school.

When I raised the issue of gun violence with my own Roanoke city delegate, his response was Im a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. What does that mean and was Del. Wrights statement correct?

Local gun stores are responding to the decision by retail giants Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods to raise the minimum age of gun sales to 21.

Dick's Sporting Goods also announced on Wednesday that they'll stop selling assault-style rifles, high-capacity magazines and certain accessories used with weapons similar to an AR-15.

Discount Guns and Ammo in Salt Lake City said they see many Utahns buy AR-15s for a number of reasons.

The evil massacre of 17 innocents at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland two weeks ago reinvigorated the national debate over gun rights and gun control; however, the debate has largely excluded African-American voices.

Despite its reputation for being apathetic to black life, the National Rifle Association has tens of thousands of black members. The National African-American Gun Association has 20,000 members and has grown from four chapters in 2016 to 30 chapters in 2017. Gun sales among African-Americans significantly spiked after the Charleston church massacre and election of Donald Trump.

While the legacy media might have you believe otherwise, the National Rifle Association is not the bogeyman it has been made out to be. In fact, anyone who wants to do just a small amount of research should talk to NRA members, law enforcement officials, or people who actually work with firearms. They will tell you a fundamental truth: The NRA has been a clear force for good in many peoples lives.

Criminals who use firearms to carry out heinous acts of violence are the real enemy, not those who stand up for our constitutional right to bear arms, promote common-sense gun safety measures, and work daily with police, hunters and sportsmen. Period.

A few weeks before the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, invited a special guest to attend the State of the Union address: Stephen Willeford, the hero who just months earlier had stopped a mass shooter at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

An ordinary citizen who heard the shots from his home across the street, Willeford grabbed his weapon, ran to the scene barefoot (knowing every second he delayed could mean another life lost) and exchanged fire with the gunman, wounding him in the leg and torso. When the killer jumped into his vehicle to escape, Willeford stopped a passing vehicle and followed in hot pursuit until the shooter crashed his car and shot himself in the head.

Like many others, I suspect mass murders in churches will increase in the near future. Christ warned us the world would hate us because it hates him. As the West increasingly chooses to reject its Christian roots, it therefore cannot help but turn to persecution and murder. There is no middle ground in this conflict where Christians are simply left to go about our business.

A Presidential Commission on Reducing Gun Violence should be established. We need a facilitator of a national discussion on how to preserve the legitimate use of guns for hunting and self-defense without exposing innocent citizens to gun violence and mass shootings. President Donald Trump is not that facilitator, but he can lead us in making it happen.

The state Supreme Court says Arizona law entitles criminal defendants to say they acted in self-defense and simultaneously deny involvement in an act of violence. The justices unanimous ruling Tuesday reverses decades of legal precedent in state court rulings while overturning a mans convictions in a double-fatal Tucson shooting and ordering a new trial.

The Ash Wednesday massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, seems to have broken more hearts than similar tragedies that preceded it. It was no more senseless than other American school shootings, but there is something about the innocence and bravery and eloquence of the youthful survivors that has touched the souls of Americans deeply.

WY: Senate removes immunity from stand your ground law

The Wyoming Senate gutted a so-called stand your ground bill that sought to provide initial immunity from arrest and prosecution for assault or murder to anyone who claimed self-defense.

In a contentious vote Tuesday, the Senate removed the immunity provision and brought the measure in line with current Wyoming law, which allows individuals to use force in self-defense but only if doing so is reasonable. Prosecutors may still bring charges against someone who claims to have acted in self-defense if law enforcement believes the more reasonable option would have been to retreat or de-escalate the situation.

The leader of Republicans in the Senate says he thinks a stand your ground bill that Gov. John Kasich said he wouldnt sign will pass anyway.

The bill removes the requirement for a person to try to retreat before using lethal force in self-defense. Kasich said on NBCs Meet the Press Daily last week that he wouldnt sign it. For a while its appeared the bill was stalled. But Senate President Larry Obhof of Medina says hes not sure about that.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970).
