Taxing Away Our Rights

"If you're a typical American, you pay more in taxes than you pay for your mortgage, car payment, and groceries combined. It wasn't always this way. Through most of this nation's history, government required only a tiny portion of American productivity. Now, we're asked to behave as if feeding bureaucrats is more important than feeding our own families or keeping a roof over our heads." ...

"Taxation is destroying many wonderful aspects of life in America. It's destroying our ability to save for our retirement, pay our children's medical bills, and get ourselves through hard times."

"It's also helping to destroy the First, Fourth, Fifth, and 10th Amendments to the Bill of Rights. Surprisingly, even the Second Amendment and our right to protect ourselves takes a hit from taxation." ...

"Where does the right for someone to bear arms and to defend themselves cross the line with my right to not live in fear?"

"In Oklahoma, lawmakers are considering what is being labeled as the 'Stand Your Ground' bill, which gives greater legal protections to people who shoot or use other deadly force when threatened or attacked."

"With similar bills pending in Georgia, and one measure already passed in Florida, in its essence this bill expands where firearms can be taken and when they can be used with deadly force, clarifying existing laws on self defense."

"Other legislation pending includes efforts to allow judges, principals and even school superintendents to carry guns." ...

"This year's Academy Awards are rife with do-good movies - but that doesn't mean the nominated flicks don't pack any firepower. Guns play a part in several of this year's biggest films."

"The designer of the most successful rifle ever made sat at a table in a quiet corner of the Kremlin. He was nearly 86 years old, but he retained the upright posture of the general he is. His pale blue gaze was firm and clear."

"Virtually everyone in the world has seen the firearm that bears his name, the AK-47. AK stands for 'the automatic by Kalashnikov,' the one-time Red Army sergeant who created its prototype at the opening of the Cold War. The number signifies 1947, the year the Soviet army accepted the prototype for mass production. With its short barrel, stock stained a brownish orange, and distinctive banana clip, the AK-47 and its derivatives long ago transcended their medium. ..." ...

"In the 12 days it was out there, we got over 2,000 responses to our Gun Nut Survey. Some of the results were flat startling. We learned that Remington rules the roost as far as popularity goes, that the highest-ranked handgun was designed before the First World War, and that our No. 1 big-game and deer cartridge is even older. But this nod to tradition aside, we found that most of you do not yearn for the good old days. You think modern guns are better, and you are perfectly happy to break with tradition if it results in a better firearm. We also learned that firearms hunters wont cross certain technological barriers if it means violating their code of ethics." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The debate over Michigan's gun and self-defense laws is intensifying.

Bills in a state Senate committee would give law-abiding people more self-defense rights against criminals in certain situations, including away from home.

Gun control groups say the bills are reckless and could create a public safety hazard.

The bills would establish a presumption of reasonable fear of death or injury when a law-abiding person uses force in certain circumstances. [emphasis added]

People who are threatened would have no duty to retreat and would be able to meet force with force in situations such as a home invasion.

"But save the four members of the Board of Supervisors who placed it on the ballot last November, the ordinance appears to have few prominent friends, even among national gun control advocates."

"Mayor Gavin Newsom all but disowned it just before Election Day. State Attorney General Bill Lockyer and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, strong advocates of assault-weapons bans, have taken no position on the San Francisco law. Of four national gun control groups, only one, which is based here, has submitted a friend-of-the-court brief supporting it." ...

The measure passed the House Judiciary Committee and was sent to the full House for consideration, despite efforts by opponents to derail the measure.

Democrat Kathy Stein of Lexington said it sends the wrong message to Kentucky. She added that it sounds like people are being encouraged to shoot first and ask questions later.

"A new piece of legislation introduced in Georgia may confound some security directors wanting to keep guns fully out of their facilities and off their campuses."

"The proposed bill, GA House bill 998, which has been reviewed and rewritten/substituted by the House Committee on Public Safety, allows licensed gun owners to legally bring weapons into the parking lot as long as the weapons stay locked in the vehicle. The bill also would give the person or business owner of the parking lot civil immunity from the presence and/or use of the gun ... "Now that we are all sick of hearing about Vice President Cheney using his buddy as a target backstop, Ive decided it is time to use my bully pulpit and offer a few comments from someone who at least has one or two clues about guns, hunting and firearms safety."

"First off, we did like that fact that Mr. Cheney belatedly admitted to the error of his ways. After all, as he contritely explained, he was the one who pulled the trigger. This indeed is the bottom line in all firearms accidents: guns do not operate of their own free will."

ALMOST 10 years on, memories of the tragic Port Arthur massacre remain so deeply etched in the Australian psyche that any increase in gun ownership would be regarded by most people as cause for concern.

Police Minister Judy Spence moved yesterday to reassure Queenslanders that the national gun laws are working and that while the number of registered firearms has increased, they have done so under much tighter controls. There are now fewer licensed firearms owners who hold, on average, three or four firearms each, the Minister said, including primary producers and sporting shooters. Police, she said, know exactly who has weapons and that they are stored safely.
