"At the end of the American Civil War, US arsenals were full of 58 caliber muzzle loading muskets and the cartridge era had arrived. The US Army Brass knew they should convert to the new cartridge arms, but they had this huge inventory of muzzle loading muskets so they commissioned the head armorer of Springfield Armory to find a way to convert the muskets to cartridge arms. Mr. Erskin S. Allin set about to make the conversion from muzzle loader to breech loader. The first Allin Conversions were 58 caliber rimfire and consisted of sawing off the back portion of the barrel and replacing it with a trap door that hinged at the front and rotated upward. This conversion worked better than any of the Civil War breech loading carbines except the Sharps ..." ...

"The state Senate is to begin hearings Tuesday on how to commit to law the kind of public behavior the gun lobby views as an expression of freedom: Shoot first and ask questions later."

"Or so it would seem under a proposed bill to give broad legal protection to those who use deadly force -- we're talking guns -- against real or perceived threats." ...

"Cropsey chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is to hear testimony on his bill Tuesday in Lansing. Senate Bill 1046 would allow citizens to use deadly force to "prevent the commission of a forcible felony" without facing criminal or civil action. The defender/shooter must have a reasonable fear of great harm. That goes for burglars." ...

"In the Old West, it wasnt uncommon for cowboys and rovers to check their guns at the local sheriffs office to cut down on gunplay that sent many men to their graves."

"Gun violence prevention advocates say they fear that lesson is being forgotten in a measure before the Oklahoma Legislature that would expand where firearms can be taken and when they can be used with deadly force." ...

"Hamm said Oklahomans and residents of other states already have the right to defend themselves from attack. He said no one in Oklahoma or anywhere else has been imprisoned for using force in a legitimate case of self-defense." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: A disingenuous argument since, if the person was convicted, Hammy would say it wasn't "legitimate self-defense".

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A bill in Kentucky's General Assembly would ban computer-aided hunting before it ever gets started in the bluegrass state.

New technology allows hunters to sit at a computer, click a mouse and fire a remote-controlled rifle to shoot an animal.

Opponents of the practice say it's not a sport and should be banned.

Kentucky is part of a pack of states to consider legislation to bar hunters from using the Internet to shoot animals. The flurry stems from a Texas Web site that was aimed at letting users fire at animals with the click of a mouse.

At the urging of sportsmen's groups, Texas lawmakers responded by passing legislation last year that banned such operations.

"About 200 protesters marched in support of an indicted former police officer Sunday afternoon outside the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department."

"They braved the cold for an hour ... Nicholas Forler, a former sheriff's deputy, is charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. He allegedly acted recklessly when he fired shots through a pickup's rear window and killed two men after a brief pursuit last fall.

"The organizer of the demonstration, family friend Sherri Hickey, said the purpose of the march went beyond this incident."

"'This has serious implications for police officers across the state,' she said. 'If they defend themselves or protect someone else, will they now be charged as the criminal?'" ...

Submitter's Note: Yeah, Sherri, isn't just awful when laws apply to police officers?

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Re the Feb. 10 letter No gun rights: Though I believe that gun-control laws are constitutional, I take issue with the letter writer's suggestion that the Second Amendment is written 'unambiguously.'

The amendment can be read any number of ways. To insist that it be read narrowly while other amendments are consistently read broadly stifles debate and fuels suspicions harbored by members of the gun lobby.

"State police aren't sure what the argument was about Friday night. But, according to a witness driving behind them ... a Volkswagen and a Hyundai were side-by-side on the highway. The drivers were yelling expletives."

"Something was thrown from the Volkswagen at the Hyundai. Then the guy in the Hyundai pointed what looked like a gun at the Volkswagen ..."

"'Obviously frightened, the Volkswagen accelerates away from the Hyundai,' a state police release said."

"After state police caught up to the Hyundai, it turned out the gun was an air pistol. Still, the driver ... was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree menacing, misdemeanors." ...

"Keeping children safe is always a priority for local law enforcement, and this weekend provided a chance for officers with Fremont Police Department and Dodge County Sheriffs Office to get the word out on one program, said Fremont deputy chief Steve Tellatin."

"At this weekends Elkhorn Valley Rifle Club gun show, officers from both departments gave out almost 450 gun locks as part of the national Project ChildSafe, Tellatin said."

"The gun locks, which look similar to bicycle locks, keep a hand gun, rifle or shotgun from firing when they are in place properly, he said."

"The intent of the gun locks is to cut down on firearm accidents, especially accidents involving children, he said." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: The only problem with these locks is you can cut the cable with tin-snips. Of course if you lose the key, this is less of a drawback . . .

"The bullet hole on Paul Maki's shooting target wasn't where it was supposed to be."

"In fact, it was way off. Down in the bottom right corner, completely outside the dinner-plate-sized scoring ring. This kind of thing isn't supposed to happen to one of Fairbanks' best shooters."

"'I don't know what I was thinking,' a smiling Maki said after recovering to put his next four shots in the center of the target."

"Then he shrugged his shoulders and said, 'That happens sometimes.'"

"Not very often, in Maki's case."

"As one of the top competitive pistol shooters in Fairbanks, Maki usually puts all 90 of his shots within the scoring ring and the majority of those are in the middle of it. ..." ...
