WA: Fight looms over registry disguised as background check, say activists

The first public hearing on House Bill 1588, the universal background check measure in Olympia, is scheduled Wednesday morning before the House Judiciary, and according to the Associated Press, backers are optimistic that they may have a winner.

But opponents of this bill, including the Washington Gun Owners Action League and the National Rifle Association, think it is a de facto registration measure in disguise. This column first discussed the proposal, which also has the attention of Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Gottlieb said HB 1588 on the House Judiciary agenda beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday goes far beyond what would be considered a reasonable background check.

LaRue Tactical has always been a class act.

Mark LaRue, the owner, is a great businessman and quite the philanthropist as well, giving generously to pro-gun rights causes and projects with both cash and product.

His latest: He holds state and local law enforcement to the same laws which are inflicted upon the civilians they serve in their respective states / municipalities.

7 round magazines? If it is good enough for civilians, its good enough for Bloombergs security detail.

No semi-autos? If its good enough for civilians, its good enough for the New York State Police.

You get the idea.

Denial has no survival value.

The people who get nervous and uncomfortable hearing about guns and school safety are in denial. Denial is the enemy, it gets you killed, said Grossman. Denial has no survival value.

What are people denying? The facts are clear, Grossman says. Armed good guys in the school deter school massacres. Thats what he calls them, massacres not shootings. Im a shooter. Youre a shooter, he said. These people, theyre killers. Theyre murderers. School shooters is a euphemism; the people who use the term are in denial. When school murderers begin their crimes, they continue precisely until armed opposition shows up....

Authorities say the homeowner came home to find four men ransacking the property around 11 a.m. Friday. Two men ran out of the house through the carport door and two came out from the bedroom area, according to Phoenix Police.

One of the suspects came at the homeowner and the homeowner fired one round at him, from a handgun he had in a holster in his waistband, police say.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he later died. He was identified as 16-year-old Mario Barcenas.

Los Angeles Police have shot up two occupied pickup trucks now in their search for the crazed gun control proponent Chris Dorner.

Dorner, the leftist Obama-loving ex-LAPD cop fired for lying, has declared a jihad on LAPD.

LAPDs members are scared for their lives. Unfortunately, in their hair-trigger nervousness, they are opening up, without provocation, on pickup trucks they fear might contain Dorner.

First, they shot up a blue pickup truck with two Hispanic women, one in her 70s.

Then they shot up a black pickup truck, the occupants there escaping relatively uninjured.

So far, Dorner has killed three and wounded a fourth.

Thus far, LAPD has shot and wounded two innocents in their search for Dorner. Theyve also ...

CCSD police and principal illegally searched and detained our son, say parents.

High school administrators found photos of students National Guard service alarming.

He was a high-school honor student, a senior and a member of the Army National Guard.

Nevertheless, say his parents, Clark County School District police and a high-school principal who didnt like his Facebook page detained him, illegally, for over three hours.
........
Our son is an active member of the Army National Guard, explains the father. He takes pictures of himself in foxholes, with tanks, wearing military gear and things of that nature.

Inquiring minds would certainly like to see the video from the squad car involved where two LA Police officers rapidly and promiscuously opened fire on a pickup truck, thinking they had the far left-wing murderer Christopher Dorner in their sights.

If you or I had opened fire on a pickup truck whose occupants werent trying to run us over or shooting at us, wed be in jail for a long time to come.

While police have a little additional leeway in using deadly force, it would seem this was a grossly inappropriate use of force and not only should the offending officers be charged criminally, but the department owes the victims a new pickup truck and probably a hefty check on top of that for pain and suffering...

The victim told police that Miles broke the bedroom window while yelling "I'm going to kill you" and was crawling through the window when the victim shot at Miles.

Earlier that evening the victim has contacted police and told them that he and Miles had been involved in a disorder at the Wal-Mart off Brainerd Rd. Miles at that time told the victim that he would come to the victim's home and kill him.

Carrying a gun lawfully for self-defense can make the difference between life and death in a critical incident, yet at the same time it can be fraught with risk to the carrier thanks to a long list of laws and regulations.

In the perfect world, you wouldnt need a permit to carry, nor training in the use of a firearm effectively for self-defense. Unfortunately, the world isnt perfect and neither are people.

All it takes is a single incident of oversight, sloppy gun handling, or lousy gear and you can find yourself without a permit at best and in jail at worst. And heaven help you if you have a negligent discharge or pull your gun without proper legal justification. Make those mistakes and you may end up in prison!

Heres a stimulating educational exercise you might enjoy:

First, look up genocides in history on Wikipedia. Take a few minutes to read the entry. Then, Google Innocents Betrayed watch the hour-long documentary. Finally, remind yourself of your God-given right, stated plainly in the Second Amendment: A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

At the conclusion of the exercise, youll never again be afraid to engage in the great gun debate.

This nation is likely to get some new laws about licensing and registering weapons. Most of these will make schoolchildren or theater-goers or college students safer. The outlawing of and determined search for military-type rifles would cut such slaughter from dozens to a couple or so per incident.

Our slavish following the words of the Second Amendment in our Constitution may keep our legislatures from outlawing military-type weapons. It is time that we start the long procedure to revoke this now-stupid and dangerous Second Amendment.

In his report's second part, Pipitone looked at the burn marks and gunshot residue that would have been left after Martin was wounded. That evidence supports Zimmerman's claim that he was under Martin when the teen was shot, Pipitone said.

Calderon said it's important for the defense to highlight there was one shot and stress the angle of that shot. "It's the key to their self-defense argument," Calderon said. "Without that, they basically have no case."

Pipitone added, "This does give credibility to Mr. Zimmerman when he testifies."

My family and I are proud Shandaken residents going on 11 years. We chose raise our son here. It is for him that I speak against the Shandaken Town Boards resolution to protest Gov. Cuomos SAFE Act.

The board is sending a message as "the voice of Shandaken" that it objects to any new effort to control, prohibit or monitor the sale of any type of guns or ammo. In this proposal, the board does not speak for me or for my family.

In the wake of the Newtown tragedy, what we need is a meaningful dialogue about how to keep our schools safe, and how to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. What we dont need are more feel-good laws that are ignored by criminals, wont stop another tragedy, and will interfere with the right of self-defense.

Local Republican Party leaders are calling on county commissioners and the state government to stand against President Barack Obamas attempt to bypass our God-given rights of self-defense.

The partys 6th Congressional District executive committee approved a resolution earlier this month asking elected officials to fight any federal edicts that violate the Second Amendment.

The resolution references 23 anti-gun initiatives Obama announced in the wake of the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

For Rep. David Taylor, a gun is like an article of clothing. He wears it everywhere even on the floor of the state House of Representatives.

Ive carried for so long that its second nature to me. Its almost like, if for some reason I dont have it with me, I feel like Im missing my wallet, said Taylor, a two-term Republican from Moxee.

What Taylor does is legal, and hes not alone. Other state lawmakers say they, too, have carried concealed weapons on the Capitol campus and on the floor. In fact, Washingtons Capitol is one of the few in the country with no restrictions on firearms.

In defiance of both the Colorado and United States Constitutions, Democrats in the Colorado legislature outlined proposals to restrict the use and ownership of firearms. At the same time, they killed Republican-sponsored bills which could have enhanced the safety of citizens.

The Colorado proposals mirror those coming from Democrats in Washington: making firearms manufacturers, sellers, and owners liable for damages caused by certain high-powered weapons; restricting private sales; empowering mental health professionals to restrict gun ownership rights of clients who come to them for help; prohibiting concealed carry on college campuses; and banning magazines of more than ten bullets.

One argument made by the National Rifle Association and its supporters is that we citizens need arms to defend ourselves, not from foreign invaders, but from a closer enemy our own government.

So these self-declared patriots are going to save us from the feds by stocking a proper arsenal of the most lethal small arms available.

But wait. The feds not only have assault rifles, but machine guns as well. I think the National Rifle Association would certainly understand the use of machine guns for citizen self-defense; but machine guns might not be sufficient.

Heres one thats worth sharing just for entertainment value. It shows a British import desperately trying to gain visibility and ratings by engaging in a series of gun control debates.

I cant vouch for the veracity of whats being said by Ventura, Pratt, et al, but they obviously win the overall arguments about the right to self defense, the fight against crime, and having the means to resist tyranny and oppression.

The debate over gun control is, at its core, a larger conflict over culture and an individuals relation to government. It is a culture war between those who value independence and individual liberty and those that value community coercion and dependence on the government; between a culture that values individual rights and the self-made man and one that says that you didnt build that, and that rights come from positive law and the government.

Womens participation in shooting sports has surged over the last decade, increasing by 51.5 percent for target shooting from 2001 to 2011, to just over 5 million women, and by 41.8 percent for hunting, according to the National Sporting Goods Association.

Gun sales to women have risen in concert. In a survey last year by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, 73 percent of gun dealers said the number of female customers had gone up in 2011, as had a majority of retailers surveyed in the two previous years.

Officials with the radio industry powerhouse Clear Channel have followed in the footsteps of a conservative Washington talk station in concluding that a message regarding the Second Amendment is too controversial for people in the Washington area to hear.

How ironic and maddening that the president is flying around the country, on our dime, trying to sell gun control but I cant BUY air time to respond, said Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Steve Vaus, creator of the Buck Howdy character.

WND had reported earlier when officials with WMAL News/Talk refused to sell him airtime for his one-minute message.
