Should The FBI Be Able To Check Records Of Gun Background Checks To See If Detainees Bought Guns?

YES - Don't limit the FBI's ability to bring possible terrorists to justice.

NO - To protect gun rights, such records shouldn't become a form of firearm registry.

Tom McKee, a member of Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church and an Indiana State Police detective, looks at one of the 30 guns taken in during the first half-hour of a gun exchange program Friday at the Crawfordsville City Building. The church sponsored the program that gives $50 to the first 50 people who turn in a gun.

Mark Malloch Brown, the administrator of the United Nations 'Development Program', said the priority was to restore security through de-mining and offering cash to get people to hand in weapons.

"One has to de-mine and re-establish a police force and judicial system, and collect weapons. We need a cash-for-guns program, like we had in Mali, Albania and Sierra Leone."

A Baldwin man accused of assaulting his wife has gone to court seeking the return of a cache of weapons that Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies seized from his home.

William C. Bloomquist, 43, has permits for the weapons and believes police have no right to hold them, said his attorney, Robert Andrews. "Our contention is that...their holding them is illegal."

The powers proposed in the 'Model State Emergency Health Powers Act' would force citizens to submit to physical exams, tests, quarantine and vaccinations against their will. Some states are already considering enactment in 2002.

Citizens' Council on Health Care (CCHC) is concerned that the proposal would provide intrusive authority for purposes far beyond bioterrorism... the writing of the Act began well before September 11th.

Of particular concern are the following provisions...

Pittsburgh 'Gun Amnesty Day' is a response to gun-related homicides and is aimed primarily at the city's 'African-American' community. There have been 57 homicides in Pittsburgh this year, and guns were used in 50. A disproportionate number of killings were in predominantly 'African-American' neighborhoods.

El Paso Times: El Paso agents with the U.S. Border Patrol said they were fired on twice from Mexico late Wednesday as they investigated a suspected smuggling near West Paisano Drive, officials said.

"The agents took cover as soon as they heard the gunfire, but no one was hurt," Border Patrol spokesman Doug Mosier said.

KABA NOTE: And gun controllers believe that we would be "safer" if firearms were banned. Obviously, they are wrong.

Rock Hill man comes up with Sept. 11 commemorative gun idea -- 25,000 people nationwide can buy special rifles as a reminder of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The stock of the rifle has an etching of the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and an eagle. Each South Carolina rifle is numbered, and "United We Stand" is imprinted on it.

American Airlines Capt. Tom Snelling put it in the form of a question: "Am I the only one who finds it unconscionable that an Air Force fighter can now shoot down a hijacked civilian airliner full of passengers, but the pilots of that airliner are not allowed to defend the aircraft from the hijacker, thus preventing the hijacking in the first place?"

"A day after U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft told Congress existing law does not allow the FBI to compare the names of suspected terrorists with federal gun purchase records, two senators introduced a bill on Friday to allow such action."

"A Justice Department official told reporters on Friday he would check with the FBI and other agencies to see if they thought there was an "operational need" to warrant a change in the law."

Attorney General John Ashcroft's refusal to give information to the FBI about criminal background checks on gun buyers is chafing several senators. They plan to do what Ashcroft challenged them to do: change the law.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Police arrested seven men and said they were closing in on another suspect Friday in the slaying of Peter Blake, a yachting champion from New Zealand who was fatally shot by pirates on the Amazon.

"The suspects claimed they fired in self-defense...they weren't expecting any resistance," said Federal Police agent Jose Araujo.

[The pirates "weren't expecting any resistance." Surprise!]

"On Nov. 30, the former astronaut and his wife got what they asked for: temporary closure of a neighboring shooting range on the Prescott National Forest."
