Utah Senate President, Wayne Niederhauser, a Republican who serves on the Assembly's leadership team, said Wednesday that "it's conceivable" that a balanced budget amendment convention could be called in the next few years.

Conservatives and liberals both have worried that if a constitutional convention does occur, states wouldn't be limited to addressing just one issue and the convention could open the door for all manner of constitutional changes from installing term limits on federal offices to campaign finance reform or limits on the Second Amendment's right to bear arms.

Rep. Kim Norton (DFL 25B Rochester) thinks that gun owners should have to get a license to own a gun, that the government needs to know where the guns are, and that registration would work just fine for guns, because she has to register her Kayak.

In this episode, Rob and I talk through the commonsense solutions proposed by Rep. Norton and the threat that they pose to gun owners here in Minnesota. We also answer a few questions from our listeners, including the question Can I open carry in Minnesota?

But after the Newtown, Connecticut, shootings in 2012, when a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, she said the threat of gun violence just felt closer than ever before.

My son was 3 years old when the shooting at Sandy Hook school occurred. I have older kids, and never once when I took them to elementary school did I have to wonder whether they were safe, she said. Now I do.

Sartoris is now the primary organizer in Brunswick for the Maine chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a national group that advocates for gun control measures.

Unless citizens have guns to assert their rights, they have only whatever rights the government permits. Thus, the Second Amendment is the peoples defense against their own government, should that government over-reach its constitutional authority.

Secondly, since local, county and state governments have no legal requirement or ability to protect citizens from criminal acts, citizens, therefore, have the responsibility to protect themselves with the arms guaranteed them by the Second Amendment. Governments can only apprehend, try and incarcerate criminals after the fact; therefore, Protect and Serve on police cars is a misnomer.

Coos County, Oregon, just passed the Second Amendment Preservation Measure and it is specifically designed to allow the Sheriff latitude to enforce only those gun control laws consistent with the original intent of the Constitution. It also bars the use of county money to enforce any laws that are determined to be unacceptable. Two additional counties in eastern Oregon passed similar bills, as well.

Its not hard to come up with reasons why Hawaii ranks among the countrys happiest states. What you may not know is that its also the healthiest. While that status is largely attributable to public health phenomena like lower rates of smoking and depression, theres another factor playing a small part: Its residents are at a significantly lower risk than mainland Americans of dying by gunshot.

A man trying to convince Pennsylvania to let him own a gun has taken his case to the Idaho Supreme Court.

Todd Rich was convicted of rape in Idaho in 1992, a felony that comes with a permanent loss of gun rights, The Spokesman-Review reported.

His conviction, however, was reduced to a misdemeanor through a 2004 sentencing agreement.

Rich now lives in Pennsylvania, where a judge has ruled that he cannot own a gun because of the rape case.

Rich filed suit in Idaho, asking a judge to declare that he still has gun rights in that state. But Fourth District Judge Lynn Norton dismissed the suit in 2014, saying Rich has no standing to sue.

Rich challenged that ruling Tuesday in the Idaho Supreme Court.

I believe the answer to the problem of gun violence in America is mandating a thorough psychiatric analysis of the person who wants to purchase the gun. If the government were able to implement such a rule, people would not lose their right to bear arms and there will possibly be less shooting events in the media.

Mr. Kolesinski also believes that guns should be permitted on college campuses. As a college student, I do not believe that this is a good idea as it does not keep the unarmed students' interest in mind. I am neither for nor against the right to bear arms; however, I am completely for the right to a safe learning environment.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle officially announced today her intention to pass the countys first round of ammunition taxes during this Fridays county board meeting.

This initial tax will slap a penny a round on rimfire ammo and a nickel a round on centerfire ammo. According to Preckwinkle, the tax is being levied on gun owners in order to improve public safety. As a gun owner, you know what a joke that is.

On October 3 2015, Mark Carman posted a YouTube video ( youtu.be/YN6rjamk0Q0 ) in which he equated gun rights with motorcycle ownershiparguing that the licensing requirement for the latter provides some standard to guide licensing requirements for the formerand the White House responded by inviting him to come visit on November 16 and 17 2015..?!?

While there Carman is scheduled to meet one-on-one with Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to President Obama, and to address Congress in a bid to secure more gun control.

That's why two years ago today, on Veterans Day, I joined with more than 100 of my fellow veterans to form a new coalition in an effort to reduce gun violence in America. Our coalition is made up of retired flag officers, former enlisted service members of the U.S. armed forces and senior officers who know how to handle weapons, know the awesome power they possess, and have seen firsthand how they can be used for good in the hands of responsible people.

As a member of the family community in Fort Walton Beach, the sudden surge of violence is quite alarming.

It seems that almost every other week there is news of another shooting resulting in homicide. This has brought to my attention how severely we need more extensive gun control. One specific flaw that needs to be fixed is the gun show loophole. Billboards in town have advertised what seems to be the third gun show in the area this year. With private sellers making sales to individuals without any background checks, it seems that virtually anyone who looks like a normal, good-hearted individual can obtain a firearm.

The survey, administered in May by consumer research company GFK, also found that 10.5% of respondents had purchased a gun because of their fears.

Fear of the government had the strongest relationship with buying a gun because of fear, said Chapman survey researcher L. Edward Day. People who have purchased a gun because of fear also have high levels of fear of technology and crime.

But the data show that in cases like these, the consequences of owning a gun can be a lot scarier than the fear that motivates the purchase.

A Marine who was shot and killed by a Colorado homeowner after he forced his way inside a house mistook the residence for his own after a night of drinking, his family said.

The homeowner, who has not been identified, will not face criminal charges. District Attorney Mitch Morrissey announced Monday that the homeowner acted within the bounds of Colorado's "Make My Day" law.

Now in reverse: Was there a campus shooting? This could not have been the rogue action of a lawless, mentally ill individual who inflicted unspeakable pain upon scores of other individuals in an isolated, incoherent, senseless rampage. Instead, our system of governing firearms, which includes the Second Amendment, failed, despite a preponderance of evidence to the contrary in the form of a hundred million peaceful Americans who own guns.

The United States Constitution for the most part is a remarkably well written document that lays down in clear and precise language the framework for our nation, however, there are exceptions. Whichever side that you fall on in the debate over the Second Amendment, it is hard to deny that it is a little vague and uncharacteristically unclear, especially in comparison to the rest of the document. Which perhaps is partially responsible for much of the disagreement over how gun ownership can, should and will be legally regulated. In a perfect world, the members of each side of the issue should be able to sit down and hammer out a clearer meaning, but sadly that isnt the world that we live in.

Four years ago, a 22-year-old white male with sun spots exploding in his psyche opened fire at a Tucson shopping mall, killing six people and injuring 14. His target was Congressmember Gabby Giffords. She took a bullet to the brain but lived anyway, though she walks funny and talks funnier. When Giffords resigned to focus on healing, her former colleagues were unanimous in praising her pluck and grit. But when she asked for legislation keeping guns away from those convicted of domestic violence charges, as she did last month, those former colleagues somehow couldnt make out her words. After all, she talks funny.

In reading the letter of 11/5 (on gun control) I could not disagree more! The writer, like so many other proponents of gun control, blames the NRA for its stand on guns.

She claims the NRA distorts the facts. Let me ask this: When we have an administration that has floated proposals to take guns away from veteran's, senior citizens who may have someone else balance their checkbook, and ban common types of ammo because of what they have been told may happen, without a single piece of evidence that the ammo has ever been used to commit a crime, why should we believe that their ultimate intent is not to disarm this country? What part of "Shall not be infringed" does the writer not understand?

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908 [by an Indian extremist opposed to Gandhi's agreement with Smuts], whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defend me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence. Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion and [World War I]. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor. Mohandas K. Gandhi, Young India, August 11, 1920 from Fischer, Louis ed.,The Essential Gandhi, 1962
