Gun control advocates in this country know they are losing the hearts and minds of more and more Americans every day. Poll after poll has shown that support for gun control is at an all time low, repeatedly their agenda has been defeated in the courts, and pro-gun laws are still sweeping the country...

Authorities have identified the weapons U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan used to carry out his murderous assault at Fort Hood as a FN Five-seveN pistol and an older model Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver. Initial accounts indicated that only the Five-seveN was used. Hasan fired an estimated 100+ times in the five-minute span from the start of the shooting spree until a civilian police officer at the base put him down with four shots from her own weapon.

Ironically, more of the wounded soldiers are possibly alive today because of Hasans media-hyped choice of weapons.

Karen Hankins said Monday she doesn't think she'll ever get over what happened last week, when she says she fatally shot her ex-husband in self-defense. But she wants to share her story to help heal and bring awareness of the dangers of mental illness.

In her first TV interview, the Redmond woman talked tearfully about how, on a night much like any other, she had to react to a situation not many people could ever dream of facing.

"I dropped the phone and took both hands on the gun, and pulled the trigger. Without even thinking. It wasn't a choice. It was a survival instinct."

A former Philadelphia Police officer will spend 30 years in prison for using his gun and badge to rob a drug kingpin of $40,000 and taking part in a home-invasion robbery.

A federal judge called 37-year-old Malik Snell's crimes "incomprehensible" given his service in the Marines and police department.

Snell robbed the drug dealer during a traffic stop and participated in the home invasion in Pottstown. He also caused a high-speed crash there that left a nurse permanently injured.

U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick says Snell perjured himself throughout three trials, two of which ended with deadlocked juries. His sentence denies Snell's request to get out and help raise his four children.

One of the pistols used by Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan was the FNH USAs FN Five-Seven, which afforded the Austin American-Statesman an opportunity to promote gun control. But their article hides the truth.

Strong nationwide gun and ammunition sales are helping El Paso gun dealers buck the recession that is hurting other businesses.

"Certain items are practically impossible to get, including ammunition for certain caliber guns," said Shane Cook, manager at the Sportsman's Elite Hunting & Gun Pro Shop in West El Paso. "The hottest items at the store have been the .380-caliber pistol, which is our top seller, and the AR-15 style rifle.

"Ammunition has also been hard to get from suppliers. For example, if we get a case in on Monday with 10 to 20 boxes, and each box contains 50 rounds, by Friday it will all be gone."

For others, however, it is the object which is evil. Thus, in the case of the Fort Hood massacre, one encounters the description of Maj. Hasans weapon of choice as a cop killer gun. For example, a story at ABCNews.go.com led with the headline, Cop Killer Gun Used in Ft. Hood Shooting, Officials Said, and declared,

The gun thought to be used in the Fort Hood massacre packs so much firepower, it's known as 'the Cop Killer,' federal law enforcement officials said.

Major Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly packed a FN Herstal Five-seveN tactical pistol, which according to federal law enforcement officials, was legally purchased from the "Guns Galore" shop in Killeen, Texas in Aug. 2009.

The ability of most American citizens to purchase semi-automatic weapons that hold multiple rounds in readily replaceable clips that can create this type of havoc appears absurd to me. We have learned, as with the major accused in the shooting at Fort Hood, that people can be of stable mind when they purchase a gun but due to stress in their personnel lives brought on by such factors as failed marriages, lost of jobs, being ostracized, post-traumatic stress disorcer or even change in ideology, can change and wreak damage to numerous people in a matter of minutes.

The man who was stabbed by his girlfriends 10-year-old son in a domestic incident early Sunday in the South Side West Pullman neighborhood was convicted in 1993 of second-degree murder, police said.

Daniel McCullough, 38, of the 11800 block of South Wallace Street, had climbed in through the back window of the residence and attacked the woman, the lieutenant said. The woman's son tried to intervene and when the man knocked him out of the way, the boy grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the man in the left shoulder.

McCullough was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, according to police who said he was convicted in 1993 of second-degree murder. Details on the murder charge were not immediately available.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks reports the man was hunting mule deer on Dad Peak on last Friday. He told officials he spooted [sic] two grizzlies about 50 yards ahead of him. The man said he yelled at them and waved his gun. But he says the bears started to move toward him.

That's when the man realized there were three bears. He said he yelled again and hoped the animals would run off. But the larger bear reportedly charged and the hunter shot the bear about 25 yards out.

Ed.: Talk about waiting till the last second! Actually, it would have taken the bear 2.0 seconds to cover that distance at 25mph (zero acceleration), but still.

What are the deadly force rules for defending myself against a dog?

...

So, any citizen is privileged to kill any dog that is in the act of attacking people, or other animals.

However, a properly-licensed dog may not be harmed unless it is in the act of attacking. Of course, all the rules of common sense and gun safety still apply and, if you find youself [sic] in a position where it is required to use a gun to defend a person or another animal from a vicious dog, you should be aware of the placement of your shots as you still may have liability for bullets that strike other animals, people, or property.

Gun control proponents argued before the states highest court Thursday that a Massachusetts law requiring gun owners to lock weapons in their homes saves lives while gun advocates pointed to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling holding that people have a constitutional right to keep weapons for self-defense.

The case involves a Billerica man whose mentally disabled son allegedly shot at a neighbor with a BB gun. The 18-year-old showed police where his father kept other unlocked guns.

Under the Massachusetts safe gun-storage law, the youths father, Richard Runyan, was charged with improperly storing a 12-gauge shotgun, a semiautomatic hunting rifle and ammunition.

But what has come to be known as the Castle Law was enacted just last year, in both West Virginia and Ohio. But the intent was the same: giving citizens the right to defend themselves, including with weapons, to ensure their safety in their own home.

"If you are in your home and someone is breaking into your house, you now have the right to shoot them," says Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks. "But I would also caution people to use due diligence and prudence before you do that."

But what it also does is place the burden of proof on both law enforcement and prosecutors, in a case involving a shooting or shooting death, to prove that the shooter was not acting in self-defense.

What, Exactly, Is a Cop-Killer Gun? (Updated)

News reports on the Fort Hood rampage say that the alleged shooter, Maj. Nidal Hasan, used an FN Herstal Five-Seven pistol described in some reports as a cop killer gun.

What, exactly, makes the Five-Seven different from other handguns?

The Five-Seven is chambered for the 5.7 x 28mm cartridge, ammunition originally developed by FN Herstal for the FN P90 Personal Defense Weapon. The P90 was conceived as a compact, powerful weapon that could be carried by aircraft crews, vehicle drivers and other troops who needed a weapon that was smaller than a carbine but larger than a pistol.

(A) plain-vanilla pistol round can be devastating enough: Think of the Virginia Tech shooter, who used a Glock 9mm and Walther .22.

Never the less, even within the well regulated conditions of a military base, a man was able to acquire and conceal two powerful personal handguns which he used to murder 13 people and wound dozens of others.

The argument that a prohibition against firearms will eliminate the possession of firearms by anyone is clearly refuted by the ample empirical evidence that prohibition simply does not succeed in its intended objective when the subject of the prohibition is something that enough of the population wants. No matter how draconian the restrictions or dire the legal consequences prohibition is defeated by desire.

This is a big week for the Virginia Tech chapter of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus.

It's Defense Education Week, and the student group, which has 100 to 200 members, has organized a week's worth of seminars and gatherings in support of concealed carry on Virginia college campuses.

Monday night's featured speaker was Philip Van Cleave, president of the pro-gun Virginia Citizens Defense League.

Earlier Monday, I spoke to Ken Stanton, 32, a serious-sounding engineering graduate student and the vice president of the Virginia Tech chapter of the concealed carry group.

I was a bit troubled, though, because he chose to reference the Wild West and armed grannies rather than society's most vulnerable. I say we follow up on Staggs' position and divert money in the stimulus package to Second Amendment rights and arm the homeless.

The fat cats in Washington would definitely think twice about protecting banks and corporations if they knew the homeless were packing heat.

The Brady Campaign against veterans

Friday, I predicted that the forcible citizen disarmament lobby would try to exploit the Ft. Hood atrocity in furtherance of their agenda of inflicting more and more draconian gun laws on the American people. The only question was what angle they would take. Later that day, the answer to that question became clear, as I discussed on my blog.

As it turns out, the gun law pushers see not one, but two avenues to the forced plundering of Americans' gun safes: A) block efforts to defend veterans' Constitutionally guaranteed, fundamental human right of the individual to keep and bear arms; and B) demonize the FN Herstal Five-seveN pistol, which was the model used by the killer.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
When you disarm your subjects, you offend them by showing that either from cowardliness or lack of faith, you distrust them; and either conclusion will induce them to hate you. NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI
