In the article " 'A horrendous crime scene,' " the crucial sentence was, "Police believe that he chose the school because it was an easy target." Schools are not "gun-free" zones; they are killing zones because we insist that no one inside is armed. Feel-good programs only encourage attacks. We've seen many times that police do not arrive in time (News, Tuesday).

The only way to stop these crimes is to properly train and arm the teachers and administrators so that they can respond from inside the school immediately with deadly force.

Students at Saint Mary's School in Longmeadow won't have any outdoor recess Friday after police received a report of a young man walking nearby with what looked like a rifle.

Longmeadow police said they notified the school as a precaution, but say they aren't worried that anyone at the school or in town is in danger.

Police said the young man was reportedly walking about a half-mile away from the school into a wooded area. Capt. Stephen Conboy said there's nothing unusual about people going into the woods this time of year with pellet or BB guns.

NY: Saratoga Springs HS Student Disciplined for Rifle in Car

The Saratoga Springs School District is taking disciplinary action against a student who had an unloaded rifle in the backseat of his car last Tuesday.

The 17-year-old's car was parked at the B.O.C.E.S. Center on Henning Road.

The school superintendent says there is no reason to believe the unidentified boy intended to use the gun.

Saratoga Springs police handled the matter, and no charges were filed.

The school punishment has not been released.

THE ISSUE: Mayor Bloomberg's gun-control initiative and affiliation with gun-toting rappers.

"Sheriff Mike Hails 109 in Mayor Posse" (Oct. 6) reports that Mayor Bloomberg led a group of like-minded mayors to Washington, D.C., to demand that Capitol Hill slash the Second Amendment and save us all from violent street thugs.

But one day prior, on Oct. 5, Bloomberg was pictured in The Post with the well-known "crime-fighter," Ice-T, who rose to fame in the '90s with his ode to law and order entitled "Cop Killer."

If Bloomberg truly wants to reduce violent crime, he should be pushing his friends in Albany for legislation to end parole now.
