"New York City Mayor Bloomberg recently formed an anti-gun coalition similar to the Brady Campaign, entitled 'Mayors Against Illegal Guns.' This group is comprised of 109 mayors from all over the country including notoriously anti-gun cities like Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Boston." ...

"Your job is to form an informal coalition of your own entitled, 'Citizens Against Anti-Gun Mayors.' If your mayor is a member of the anti-gun coalition you need to expose him or her by calling into your local talk radio station, writing letters to the editor, and telling all of your friends. Then you should try to get 20 or more people together and schedule a group appointment with the mayor. ..." ...

"Statistically, our schools are safe. Students are safer there than anywhere else, including their homes."

"Nonetheless, the sporadic spasms of violence -- shootings in four states in the past two weeks -- are such a shock to the social fabric and the national sense of safety that the authorities feel compelled to do something, if only to convene a conference."

"Thus, this past week the president and first lady appeared at a hastily put together White House Conference on School Safety held in a well-to-do suburb known for some of the capital area's best and safest schools before a screened, invitation-only audience, no Democrats or administration critics, and certainly no gun-control advocates." ...

"President Bush held a one-day summit Tuesday on school violence, his response to recent and deadly school shootings in Colorado, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Had he been interested in more than the photo-op, he might have billed it as a one-day summit on 'how to keep guns out of the hands of men, boys, criminals and kooks,' so they don't shoot up our schools and our post offices and our workplaces and our neighborhoods. The nexus - in Amish Country and Yonkers and New York City - isn't really between schools and violence, but between disturbed people with guns and wherever they wish to wreak havoc." ...

"Three school incidents in the past week." ...

"Governor Blunt thinks some people took something he said in Joplin earlier this week and ran with it---wrongly. He does not favor arming teachers. But he says the general topic is worth talking about ... and maybe some weapons should be available in schools to some teachers properly trained to use them. Governor Blunt says he does NOT favor arming all teachers. ..."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Two Dirigo High School students face charges after they were found in possession of a BB pistol in an incident that prompted officials to lock down the school.

The incident, which took place 30 minutes after classes ended Tuesday afternoon, caused a scare in the wake of recent shootings at other schools in Pennsylvania, Colorado and Wisconsin.

The incident at Dirigo High involved two teenagers who were showing off the gun to friends, police said. Nobody was hurt or threatened, but a 16-year-old Rumford boy and a 15-year-old Dixfield boy were charged with terrorizing with a firearm, a Class C felony, said Dixfield police Sgt. Mark Dow.

The teens were released to their parents and are scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 13.

"One tool Hawkins County Schools use to prevent the violence that has occurred in other school districts nationwide is vigilant students and adults who report potential threatening situations to authorities."

Hawkins County Sheriff's Deputies and school officials were waiting for the student as soon as he got off the bus in the morning. The 15-year-old sophomore had allegedly brought a gun to school Tuesday."

"The Speaking Out essay 'Get tough on illegal gun owners' (Sept. 25) by Sen. Joseph Robach, R-Greece, and the Rev. Marlowe Washington amounts to hanging a dead man. For years, the Republican Senate has blocked legislation that would stop distribution of illegal guns. The Senate refused to act on crime bills passed by the Democratic-led Assembly during 2005-06. These would have expanded the state ballistic database (which catalogs the markings left on an expended round/casing), banned armor-piercing bullets, and required dealers to lock up their weapons after their stores close." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970).
