"Arms control activists urged U.N. treaty writers on Monday to approve a system for tracking small arms sales around the world, saying it was easier to track lost airline luggage than a machine gun."

"Amnesty International, Oxfam International and the International Action Network on Small Arms called for a legally binding global marking and tracing treaty covering small arms and ammunition at the start of a two-week U.N. conference weighing how to deal with the problem."

"'A piece of lost luggage can be traced from San Francisco to Sierra Leone within hours, yet deadly weapons disappear without trace on a daily basis,' said Jeremy Hobbs, the director of Oxfam International." ...

"Why does right to carry result in reduced crime? In surveys of violent criminals, the number one thing they say they fear is not the police, who almost always get to the scene of a crime after its over, but an armed citizen. And in his book, More Guns, Less Crime, economist John Lott pointed out that in a county-by-county study of all 3,054 counties in the U.S., wherever gun restrictions are relaxed violent crime rates have dropped, with the greatest drops in the counties that had had the most crime. In adjoining states where right to carry was instituted in one state and not the other, crime in the counties in the right-to-carry states went down while, right across the border, crime in the state with restrictions generally went up."

"Call me a 'gun nut' if you must. But I'm really not one. Still, I did give my sweet, innocent 5-year-old daughter a gun for Christmas. Not just any gun, mind you. It's commonly called a 'street-sweeper.' It's automatic or semi-automatic. Honestly, I don't really know much about guns." ...

"My 5-year-old makes a heckuva lot more sense than those who fear, without a shred of evidence, that playing with toy guns will somehow turn kids to crime. She makes more sense than the school in Indiana, where officials altered their school's mascot a Minuteman to remove the musket he carried. They feared the armed minuteman symbolized gun violence. I guess they hadn't yet gotten to American history."

"Today, when we are inured to the idea of armed robbery and drive-by shootings, the aspect of the 'Tottenham Outrage' that is most likely to shock is the fact that so many ordinary members of the public at that time should have been carrying guns in the street. Bombarded with headlines about an emergent 'gun culture' in Britain now, we are apt to forget that the real novelty is the notion that the general populace in this country should be disarmed." ...

"Restrictive 'gun control' in Britain is a recent experiment, in which the progressive "toughening" of the regulation of legal gun ownership has been followed by an increasingly dramatic rise in violent armed crime. Eighty-four years after the legal availability of pistols was restricted to Firearm Certificate holders, and seven years after their private possession was generally prohibited, they still figure in 58 per cent of armed crimes. Home Office evidence to the Dunblane Inquiry prior to the handgun ban indicated that there was an annual average of just two incidents in which licensed pistols appeared in crime. If, as the Home Office still asserts, 'there are links between firearms licensing and armed crime', the past century of Britain's experience has shown the link to be a sharply negative one."

"In this post-Columbine era, when school districts say they have 'zero tolerance' for weapons, students and parents often are shocked to find the policy can mean just that -- no tolerance at all for any transgression, no matter how trivial it might seem."

"That reportedly was the experience of a Cupertino High School soccer player recently, when the district suspended him from school for, according to his father, having a pocketknife in his clothing outside a school dance."

"Present-day enforcement of zero-tolerance policies 'is absurd,' said Gary Redenbacher of the Children's Advocacy Institute at the University of San Diego School of Law. 'School officials have completely abdicated their discretion.' "

I think the city of Wichita is making a smart choice to cash in on funds from selling confiscated guns. I would complain if that source of revenue were wasted merely because of where it came from. Would they next start destroying the confiscated vehicles of drug pushers instead of selling them, or perhaps not returning stolen items because they were in the hands of criminals?

When will people realize that it's not the gun that commits a crime, it's the person holding the gun? I have a variety of handguns in my home, and I've never once caught one sneaking out for a night of murder and mayhem.
