"One day after Murfreesboro-based Barrett's Firearms Manufacturing was featured on CBS' '60 Minutes,' the company's owner said coverage went as expected but may provide a toehold for anti-gun activists to push legislation he believes violates the Second Amendment." ...
"Barrett is the designer and manufacturer of .50-caliber sniper rifles, an extremely powerful weapon he sells under contract to various militaries, law enforcement agencies, civilian collectors and gun enthusiasts. The Washington D.C.-based Violence Protection Center, however, hopes to extend the ban recently placed on civilian sales of the rifles in California to the rest of the nation."
"Tom Diaz of the Violence Protection Center, the main voice of opposition to the sale of Barrett's rifles to civilians, claims the specialty rifles, which combine high power with an effective range well of more than a mile, could be a serious threat to national security in the hands of a terrorist."

"The National Rifle Association, the nation's oldest sportsmen's organization, has named Dawson R. Hobbs as Manager of Hunting Policy. Mr. Hobbs will serve as the principal liaison for all hunting-related legislative issues at both the congressional and state level."
"This is a new position within the NRA created to consolidate and strengthen American hunters' political power through a visible advocacy group that preserves the sport, expands seasons, opens lands and celebrates the culture of hunting. A vital part of this position will be to rein in the growing effort to marginalize rank and file hunters by reducing hunting opportunities and increasing hunting tariffs." |

"The militia, being regulated sufficiently to answer the call to arms in times of security threat, serves a second purpose as well: to protect against the threat of a power-hungry government using a standing army for its own ends."
"Hamilton delineates his vision not only of a free people bearing arms for the common defense, but also for the protection of liberty. It was intended by the framers of our Constitution that a free people be armed. Therefore, it follows that those who wish the people disarmed also wish them enslaved." |

"It is quite obvious that there were many in early America who did not want slaves, or those sympathizing with their suffering, from having access to guns. Why? Well, it is pretty simple. If slaves had guns, then they would not have been slaves for much longer. Firearms would be used by slaves as a tool to overthrow their oppressors just as the American Colonists had done against the British and demand their full rights and dignity as citizens. The 'Uniform Militia Act of 1792' opened a door that was used by many states to pass follow up legislation that made it illegal not just for African-Americans to carry or own a gun, but to even use one unless under orders from their 'master.' From its inception, gun control was a vehicle to deny basic rights, prevent self defense, and oppress citizens." |

"This is a very far cry from how we see the first portion of the First Amendment interpreted today, so how did the First Amendment come to mean something entirely different? It would take volumes to explain the plethora of ways in which the courts have subverted the meaning of the First Amendment. I could go into a lengthy dissertation about how, beginning in 1925 with the Gitlow v. New York case, the Fourteenth Amendment has become inextricably tied to the First Amendment and gives the federal court jurisdiction over the states, municipalities and school boards, but if that was indeed the intention of the Fourteenth Amendment, why is it not also inextricably tied to the Second Amendment? Why are municipalities allowed to deny the right to keep and bear arms? In short because applying the Fourteenth Amendment to the Second Amendment does not fit the agenda of activist judges, thereby leaving a tendency of selective application of their own subverted ruling." |

"SKS assault rifles like the one reported by police to have been used in an ambush shooting on Sunday, January 9, to murder one police officer and critically wound another in Ceres, CA, are a primary threat to law enforcement, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) reported today. In 2004 at least six law enforcement officers were slain by SKSs. In the wake of the shooting, the VPC called on President George W. Bush to use the Administration's executive authority over firearm imports to ban the import of all foreign-made assault rifles. Such an action would not require Congressional approval. The Bush Administration has specifically authorized the importation of SKS assault rifles made in Albania and the former Yugoslavia." |
