Fugitive wounded by armed citizen still sought

MIAMI, FLORIDA -- Police on Thursday charged a 20-year-old man with six felony counts of armed robbery stemming from two violent Oakland Park incidents that occurred in the past month.

Detectives identified David A. Smith on Thursday and believe he is armed and roaming the Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park areas. They said he pulled a small-caliber handgun and robbed two men and two women of money and jewelry at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in the parking lot of Fitzwilly's Pub & Raw Bar, 2500 W. Oakland Park Blvd.

On Oct. 4, Smith entered an industrial manufacturing shop and robbed the co-owners, a husband and wife, pistol-whipping the husband, police said.

"In both of his cases, he repeatedly told his victims he would kill them if they didn't give him any money," said Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.

The names of the six robbery victims have not been released because there is evidence Smith may retaliate, Coleman-Wright said. She said Smith took the driver's license of one of the women in the first robbery.

"Considering how dangerous he is and how violent he has been toward the victims, detectives are concerned he may come out and follow through on these threats [by killing them]," Coleman-Wright said.

Court records show Smith was released from the Broward County Jail on Aug. 28, after serving a one-year, nine-month sentence for felony convictions of burglary of an unoccupied structure and selling or manufacturing cocaine.

Police said Smith worked alone in the first robbery, snatching five gold chains from a 44-year-old woman and driving away in a maroon 1985 Chevrolet Caprice.

During the second robbery, police said, the husband -- age 47 -- managed to retrieve his 9mm handgun from an office, shooting Smith in the left foot. Police said Smith escaped, jumping into the same car driven by a male.

Police found the car Oct. 6 at Northwest 24th Avenue and 14th Street near Fort Lauderdale. Coleman-Wright said the car was transported to a BSO crime lab Thursday.

Anyone with information about Smith or the robberies should call Detective Bob Kerr at 954-321-4270, or Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
